Is There an Ideal Portfolio Model?   by Shovon D

Everyday Glamour First Photography is honoured to meet at least one new portfolio model – usually a teenage boy or girl who’s got his or her heart set on a career in the modelling industry. Working at a London photography studio where modelling photography and model portfolios are the name of the game I sometimes get asked if there is an ideal kind of portfolio model, or an ideal subject for a make over photo, glamour Photography Photos or nude photography. Not really, is the answer I usually give. In the case of standard modelling photography it makes our life easier is the model isn’t fresh as a daisy and knows her way round a photo shoot – but then on the flip side this can get boring. There’s something quite satisfying about meeting a new ‘face’ and nurturing them into a prototype of the professional model they could eventually become. We really do meet all sorts at this London photo studio, and it keeps things interesting. Obviously there are certain physical characteristics that make some models more gratifying to create model portfolios for than others – for example, it sounds obvious but a slender figure really does make it easier to get clothes to look good. Conversely, for glamour photography photos a busty, full-figured lady achieves the best visual result while, for nude photography, pretty much anything goes. The only thing I would say about nude photography is that the model really needs to be comfortable with doing this kind of shot, or at least able to become comfortable with it after a bit of coaxing. It’s difficult to get great results if the person can’t relax and get into the shoot. This isn’t normally a problem at these London photo studios, where we employ the absolute best photographers – gifted individuals who knows how to cajole the perfect poses from even the most reticent of their ‘victims!’ The models are usually delighted with the results afterwards and glad they had the courage to take the plunge with nude photography.

When someone comes in for a make over photo it’s fun for everyone involved if they already have quite a strong look, so we can experiment with the polar opposites. We once had a young girl come in as a Goth, but was keen to try her hand at modelling. After helping her clean all the gunk off her face it was clear that, as a blank canvas, she was absolutely beautiful. We changed everything about her look, and her best photos showed her as a sweet, pretty, natural-looking young girl rather than a defensive teenager. The transformation was incredible and she later went on to get a position in a top modelling agency.

So I guess, returning to the question of whether there is an ideal kind of model, I would say perhaps there is – someone who isn’t afraid to change themselves and experiment with new personas, all the better for becoming a unique and eye-catching portfolio model.
